SYNOPSIS
A tribute to the healing journeys of African women artists in their communities around the world. Sunshine Boutique follows the stories of four women in New York, Philadelphia, Amsterdam and Cape Town. Their expressions for social change are accompanied by dance, visual art, original musical arrangements and the voices of poets, activists, singers, and filmmakers. Set in a tapestry of stunning vistas and invocations of hope from histories of struggle, Sunshine Boutique stands against homophobia, xenophobia, sexism and racism, while celebrating beauty, love and life. | |

 | DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
In Via New York, I sought ways to relate the experiences of immigrants and continental African ‘people who love people of the same sex’ to some of the ‘bread and butter’ issues of concern to African states.
In Sunshine Boutique, the ‘bread and butter’ issues are those identified and expressed by Black women of all sexualities within their communities. Both films hope to contribute to the general portrayal of Pan-African peoples and issues in multi-dimensional ways and to challenge narrowly defined views of acceptable African gender roles, at the heart of homophobia.
Sunshine Boutique takes the further step of relating these ideas to African women’s organizing, creative faith and spiritual renewal.
My hope is to celebrate a few expressions of contemporary Black feminism, women’s creativity and hope.
